The dependent variable is the value we want to predict and is also known as the target value. On the other hand, the independent variable (s) is the predictor. WebWhen implementing simple linear regression, you typically start with a given set of input-output (𝑥-𝑦) pairs. These pairs are your observations, shown as green circles in the figure. For example, the leftmost observation has the input 𝑥 = 5 and the actual output, or response, 𝑦 = 5. The next one has 𝑥 = 15 and 𝑦 = 20, and so on.
