WebIn this setup, because we are using solar, the steam engines only run in the night, while the boiler runs all the time. That is why we need more steam engines here than usually, to consume all the steam the boiler has produced throughout the day. Also a factorio day is 70% daylight and 30% darkness, which makes this difference even more extreme. WebI built a power station that consists of 20 rows of 10 boilers + 20 steam engines. I run a belt of coal and pipes with pumps along the array, pumping towards the boilers and further down the pipe (2 pumps per connection to a boiler array, if you understand me) . However, the water in the pipes does not flow beyond row 8 or something like that.

Back on topic, you *can* indirectly save on coal in two ways. First, use Efficiency Modules. Efficiency is capped at an 80% reduction, so three level 1 modules, or two level 2, are sufficient and cheap. WebIf power demand is low, some turbines and/or steam engines in the network will be on standby. Too little water, or too many heat exchanger and/or turbines could also be a problem.
